2014 Session 41: The Bible — Literal or Figurative?

In today’s session, Dr. Nunnally tackles the basics of scriptural interpretation. How much of the Bible should we take literally? How much is figurative? How shall we distinguish historical references from metaphorical references? “Ninety-nine percent of the Bible explains itself. Look for meaning in the ‘context’.”

Jeremiah 1:11-13; Ezekiel 11:3,7; Isaiah 5:1-7; Ezekiel 20:20-21; Ezekiel 21:5; Luke 23:31; Matthew 3:1-12; John 15; Matthew 13:3-18

2014 Session 40: Almond Tree

In today’s session, Dr. Nunnally directs our attention to Jeremiah’s use of figurative language. While the theme of God empowering those He calls continues to be the focal-point of our discussion, references to a “boiling pot,” an “almond branch” and “hot coals” remind us that through language, “God shows Himself approachable and relational.”

Jeremiah 1:22-16; Exodus 4:11; Isaiah 6; 2 Corinthians 12; Joel 2; Numbers 11; Ephesians 5:18; Acts 10; Isaiah 42 + 49; Ecclesiastes 3; Numbers 17:8

2014 Session 39: Live or Die

Today’s session kicks off, referencing God’s admonition to Jeremiah: be not afraid.  Dr. Nunnally quickly took up the question of how believers interpret divergence in terms of  outcome. Some are healed. Some die. Why is there such a polarity with respect to outcome? “We are grounded in our confidence in God. Whether we live or die, we share in God’s glory — a theme we see expressed so poignantly in Hebrews 11:22 – 39.  This is a faith we can live with; this is a faith we can die with.”

Jeremiah 1:7-8; 1 Peter 2:9; Exodus 5:7; Joel 2; Isaiah 40:8; Philippians 1:12 -17; Hebrews 11: 32 -39; Acts 12

2014 Session 38: Covenant of Presence

Today’s special session begins with a discussion of God’s promise to be with us to the end. Dr. Nunnally reminds us that this promise of God’s associated presence is the most repeated promise in scripture. In an unusual convergence of subject and presentation, the class experiences a special visitation of presence that proceeds to overwhelm the discussion.

Jeremiah 1:8; John 1; Isaiah 41:13; Psalm 23; Psalm 92; Revelation 21:10; Ephesians 2; Psalm 46; Psalm 22
