2014 Session 2: Community

Part of the mission of the Body-of-Christ is to those outside the faith. We’re also on a mission to our brothers and sisters who worship with us, within the Body-of-Christ. In this session, Dr. Nunnally reminds us that the early church required new leadership, as well as a new community and fellowship. “Beginning in the book of Acts we find — not just the disciples — but we find upwards of 120 people who have constituted themselves around the person and teachings of Jesus … as a unique community.” A community that included the earthly family of Jesus. “Community” is a vital part of “new life in Christ.”

2014 Session 1: God’s Barriers

In today’s class, Dr. Nunnally takes up Paul’s delayed missionary journey to Rome. Our extended session on the book of Romans has amply demonstrated the concern Paul had for the believers who lived in the imperial city. God had been the source of Paul’s spiritual burden for the community, but God also seemed to allow barriers that prevented his mission to travel there. Why? In the end, Paul does make the journey, but his passage was as a prisoner, and a shipwreck survivor. How are we to understand God’s vision-for-service, impeded by God-permitted barriers to that service?
